Overview
School districts are invited to participate in a program designed to increase plant-based options in school cafeterias. School districts may qualify for funding for the 2009-2010 school year. Districts will be asked to provide sales data and other non-identifying information for the development of a best-practices report on implementing vegan options in the National School Lunch Program. This program is free of commercial sponsorship.
Eligible Schools
To receive funding, schools should:
- Participate in the National School Lunch Program
- Currently serve few or no vegan main course options
- Share the data specified in the project plan
Benefits
The benefits to participating in this project include:
- Expanding cafeteria offerings to include healthful plant-based options
- Promotional materials, such as posters and puzzles
- Consultation from health care professionals who specialize in vegetarian and vegan nutrition
